The St. Sarkis Armenian Church Seniors Program is a community service for elderly Armenians in the community. Up to 25 of our cherished seniors participate in events, lectures, bingo, sightseeing tours and visitation to the sick and elderly. In addition to our social and outreach program some of our members learn English on Saturdays.
Tours are provided by the Dallas Area Rapid Transit organization, including visits to historic towns, the Federal Reserve Bank, Old City Park, Dallas World Aquarium and American Airlines Center. The group also has enjoyed picnics in the Arboretum, art gallery visits and other activities, which can draw younger parishioners tagging along for the fun. Other members of the community helped host health fairs, lectures, video viewing, and generation appreciation day for our seniors.
The Seniors Program started in 1996 to assist elderly parishioners who often feel isolated, partly because they do not drive and do not speak English. They also feel culture shock, as they are used to the traditional Armenian culture, in which many generations lived under one roof. This blessed tradition continues to this day in some families. Armenians learn from the elderly and cherish their ideas and knowledge. It is indeed a privilege to help and show respect to our elderly. There is an old Armenian saying, quote: “We were like you and you will be like us.”( Menk tsezi bes eyink took al bidi ellak mezi bes)
The Seniors Program could not materialize without the help of dedicated volunteers. We appreciate and welcome anyone who can donate a few hours to assist the program, as this will really brighten a senior’s day.
